‘Game of Thrones’: Hodor-dilemma- Casual Loop Temporal paradox

Source - http://fandom.wikia.com/

That tragic episode of Game of Thrones featured the death of everyone’s favorite giant with a speech impediment. Hodor‘s final sacrifice saved Bran and Meera‘s life. It was a tear-filled goodbye and the end of Hodor piggy-back-rides.

So Hodor’s disability led to his ultimate sacrifice, which in turn led to his disability, which in turn led to his ultimate sacrifice… uh… wait a second. Bran changed the past, to create the future, that let him change the past, to create the future… Huh? If you’re sensing something isn’t right here, you’re correct.

A causal loop is a paradox of time travel that occurs when a future event is the cause of a past event, which in turn is the cause of the future event. Both events then exist in space-time, but their origin cannot be determined. A causal loop may involve an event, a person or object, or information causal loop is also known as a boot-strap paradox, predestination paradox or ontological paradox in fiction

There are a couple of theories we can apply to Game of Thrones to find the source of the Hodor-dilemma. First, Game of Thrones could exist in a multiverse. If Bran isn’t warging into the past, but instead into an alternate universe, then we can kind of side-step the bootstrap paradox. This episode’s version would be one of many timelines and the loop would have a source, just not in our timeline or universe.

Similarly, if we hold to the theory that messing with the past creates a new timeline, then we can imagine a source-timeline in which Wylis does not suffer from single-word-syndrome. If so, perhaps Wylis still joined Bran north of the Wall, still encountered the White Walkers, and still had to “hold the door.” At which point, perhaps Bran warged into him anyway, causing the past Wylis to become Hodor, thus creating the causal loop and current Game of Thrones timeline we know and love.

Of course, all of this is a form of narrative gymnastics. This is the problem with causal loops. We have to come up with our own explanation.

Here is what I believe, setting aside the messy time travel paradox.

When Wylis was young, he lived through his own death. In his final moments, as Hodor, he lived it again. He faced his fear, not as a warg under Bran’s command, but as Wylis, the stable boy who loved the Starks with all his heart. I believe he knew, in that moment and with sudden clarity, where his circuitous path had led. His sacrifice, the noblest one, was made with courage and the knowledge he had played his part as destined. Hodor died as Wylis, a hero, and no amount of time travel can change that.

I will find you (Episode 1)

It was around 7.15 pm friday evening, Aryan was in market with his friend Rohan. The same night they were about leave for Rishikesh. After all booking things in Rishikesh, Aryan didn't had much money left but since it was going to be his first adventure trip he wanted it to be perfect. So he was searching for a cool looking capri in market that could fit under his budget.

After patrolling all the shops finally they got the one they wanted. Meanwhile Aryan was continuously trying to call his father to inform that he is about to leave tonight but that night his network was unreachable. Rohan received a call from Ashi telling him that she is in metro and will reach there in 10 min.
"Lets go towards gate no. 1 Ashi is coming there and I am feeling very hungry, first we will eat something then we will get back to our flat" said Rohan. "But Tanya will be coming too, we are already late, lets go directly to flat. She was saying that she will prepare something to eat before we leave", responded Aryan to save some money. But Rohan wanted to spend and Aryan cannot see his friend eating alone. Both were standing in front of stairs of gate no. 1 metro when they saw Ashi coming downstairs. The magical friendship between them made them start smiling seeing each other and when she came closer both spoke together "what have you done to your teeth you were smiling like a rabbit". Ashi showed them her frowned face and said "bhaakk". They all laughed and They went to their favourite eating spot of Atta Market. Rohan ordered Kathi roll but Ashi and Aryan were still thinking whether to try 40 Rs Lassi here or should they drop the idea. But one cannot drop the idea when everyone around you is eating something.

Rohan got his roll and they finally ordered lassi. Aryan took out his new mobile phone "See the most expensive phone in the world, OMG I own it. Not like your cheap one, you cant even imagine its features". It was a custom between them to brag about the all new things they buy and after all Aryan has finally bought a real smart phone after using a duplicate of iphone from the last six months. "Arey you dont know Ashi he made me ride 40 kms with traffic to buy this phone, just because of this golden shade" interupted Rohan. "So what? You ate 2 plate paani puri & lassi for doing so", replied Aryan. "Paani Puri ! I also want to eat paani puri" said Ashi cutely but she was denied as they were really getting late and Tanya was calling.
Rohan had parked his bike to the opposite side of road. To reach there hey needed to cross the divider just below the metro track.

Atta market is usually a very busy market and that day was Friday so the crowd was just double. Everyone was looking free, happy and little care free. While passing the divider Rohan went a little bit away as it was crowded. "have you got my 900 Rs Ashi ? I will need it, I'm going cashless soon". "Hmm I have it". The traffic on that little road divider just got stuck for a moment. No one was moving and Ashi continued talking about her office gossips but her voice stopped reaching Aryan's ear. He felt something missing, check and checked again. "Did I gave my phone to you ? " asked Aryan. "No ! check your poly bag". A girl exclaimed from back "someone took something from your pocket and ran backwards". Aryan without thinking a moment turned back and started to run but he forgot to ask which direction to run. He took left, went few meters and rolled back to ask her again with his shivering voice "what was he wearing ? where did he went ? did you saw him ? Ashi call Rohan fast" "He was wearing royal blue t-shirt but I didn't saw which direction he went, I only saw someone running", replied that strange girl. He again ran in all direction just to find anyone hiding or running in crowd wearing blue t-shirt but returned with nothing.  Ashi too was surprised with the situation, all what she help was to call Rohan who was not receiving the call.

The shock exploded Aryan's face, he felt the land sliding below his shaking legs "God damn I bought that phone after collecting money for months, I cannot loose it". Rohan finally got the information and reached the site but couldn't utter a word. "Rohan lets goto police, I need my phone back, god damn I cannot loose it, I want my phone back any how", said Aryan. "Yaar let it go, you cannot find it back now, police is now going to help us for this. You will only waste your time there. All you can do is to file an FIR so that you can atleast get back you sim card", replied Rohan. "No I will find him, I will have to find him, cancel the trip, I am not going anywhere, I cannot let a thief stole my thing, I will behead that mother fucker brutally".
They told Ashi to take a rickshaw and go to flat and themselves went to an Police Chawki. The constable was too quick, heard half the story and said "you see there is Police interceptor vehicle standing, just go there and they will catch your thief". Rohan went to park his bike but Aryan didn't waited he ran towards the interceptor. They were also very quick, heard the quarter of Aryan's case and took him inside the car and told him to direct us to the incident site. Aryan saw Rohan coming from far but he felt the hope that the policeman can find the thief if they leave the same moment without Rohan. It was not more than 100m from there, they reached their quickly. Aryan was continuously asking "uncle can you find my phone? will I be able to get that back"  The policeman replied very positivity  asked few question and concluded this is not our area but they were kind enough to drop him to the police chawki for the respective area.

That was again just another 100m from the site but in opposite direction. That chawki looked abandoned, Aryan went inside where a person in civil dress was drinking whiskey. He was the first policeman who heard the full incident and said, "So, what can I do in this", Aryan now has no more space left to get shocked over this "just gimme your phone sir I need to call my friend ".The yawning policeman replied " I don't have balance go to sector 20 police station and file a report there". Aryan didn't had anything else to feel except regretting for loosing his mobile.

He came out and requested a passer-by duo "Hey my phone just got stolen, can you please gimme your phone to call my friend". One of them replied "Are you tricking us ? leke bhag to nhi jaoge ? ". "No brother I am telling the truth". Other guy said "I trust you, I can see the truth from your shivering fingers take my phone and call your friend". Aryan called Rohan but it was not reachable and thanked the duo for free.

He took an auto for Sector 20 police station. Auto wala asked "what's the matter ? why are you hurried to go to police station ?". Aryan replied "Damn my phone just got stolen, I bought it just a week ago". "Oh why you guys buy such expensive mobile phone ? What's the need I never understand ? always use a cheap phone just as I do". Hearing the whole story autowala concluded that- "the strange girl who told you that someone took your mobile was actually the master mind of the whole game", but Aryan had other logical things to think about.

Till this date such incidents were only a common news paper material for him but today he saw the society at more depth. He was no more a common man. From today he became a victim. But the loss was not going to get discarded from Aryan's mind this soon. 'Someone took his new mobile from his pocket' was something that was not dissolving easily. This was not about the monetary loss but the loss of his confidence. Aryan was a person who lives in his own dreams and stories where he is a Hero and someone cannot fool him like this. Hero has to rise back and restore the balance, so the ending is not going to happen this way. Aryan took deep breaths, he knew he needs a plan to get his mobile as well as his confidence back. He said in his mind "You son of a bitch, I don't know where you are. Searching you is like searching a needle in a pile of chaff which is only possible in movies. But however tough things may go I swear to myself that I will find you anyhow.
